An update on the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (S.O.N.G.S.).

As you're likely aware, the SONGS facility is in the process of decomissioning. A hotly contested debate remains about what to do with the plant's spent nuclear fuel during this process. "One-third of San Onofre’s used fuel is currently in dry cask storage and the remaining two-thirds is stored in steel-lined concrete pools...SCE plans to move the fuel from the pools into dry storage by 2019, where it would remain until an off-site storage facility is available..."
Therein lies the issue: The plan is to "temporarily" (remember, these are government timelines we're dealing with) store used nuclear fuel, outside, and just a couple hundred yards from one of So Cal's most treasured surf and family playgrounds - San Onofre beach "...until an off-site storage facility is available..." Uhhhh, and just when might that be???
A recent article, dated 8/28/2017, titled "SCE Settlement Announced in Suit Challenging Nuclear Fuel Storage at San Onofre" details an agreement which "plots a prudent strategy in furtherance of the goal of moving the fuel sooner than later". Click the link above to see the actual press release.
